Limbal Lesions
A limbal lesion refers to any abnormal growth or change in the limbus, which is the border area between the cornea and the sclera (the white part of the eye). Limbal lesions can take various forms, including growths, spots, or discolorations, and they can be benign or indicate more serious conditions.
Common Types of Limbal Lesions
Pinguecula: A yellowish, elevated growth that typically appears on the conjunctiva near the limbus, often due to UV exposure and irritation.
Limbal Dermoid: A congenital condition where a benign growth containing skin, hair follicles, or other tissue forms at the limbus.
Nevus (Mole): A benign pigmented lesion that can occur at the limbus.
Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency: A condition where the stem cells that help maintain the corneal surface are damaged or absent, leading to issues like corneal scarring or opacity.
