What is a Pterygium?

A pterygium is a benign growth of tissue on the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye. It often extends onto the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. Pterygia are sometimes referred to as "surfer's eye" due to their association with UV exposure, wind, and dust, commonly experienced by people who spend a lot of time outdoors.

Limbal Lesions

A limbal lesion refers to any abnormal growth or change in the limbus, which is the border area between the cornea and the sclera (the white part of the eye). Limbal lesions can take various forms, including growths, spots, or discolorations, and they can be benign or indicate more serious conditions.

Common Types of Limbal Lesions

  1. Pinguecula: A yellowish, elevated growth that typically appears on the conjunctiva near the limbus, often due to UV exposure and irritation.

  2. Limbal Dermoid: A congenital condition where a benign growth containing skin, hair follicles, or other tissue forms at the limbus.

  3. Nevus (Mole): A benign pigmented lesion that can occur at the limbus.

  4. Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency: A condition where the stem cells that help maintain the corneal surface are damaged or absent, leading to issues like corneal scarring or opacity.
