What is IPL Therapy?


Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive treatment that uses pulses of light to manage chronic dry eye, particularly when associated with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). IPL has gained popularity In the dry eye space for improving dry eye symptoms by targeting inflammation and restoring healthy function to the Meibomian glands and improving overall tear health and function.

How IPL Helps with Dry Eye

  1. Reduces Inflammation:
    The light pulses reduce inflammation around the eyelids, which can help minimize irritation and improve tear stability.
  2. Unclogs Meibomian Glands:
    IPL melts and softens the oil trapped in blocked glands, expressing the glands immediately after treatment can aid in encouraging proper oil flow into the tear film
  3. Minimizes Bacterial Growth and Mites:
    IPL can also reduce bacteria and Demodex mites on the eyelid margins, both of which are linked to eyelid inflammation and dry eye.

What to Expect During IPL Treatment

  • Procedure: A specialized device delivers light pulses to the skin around the eyes. You will wear protective eye shields to prevent exposure to the bright light.
  • Duration: Each session takes 10-15 minutes.
  • Comfort: The treatment is generally well-tolerated. Some patients may feel mild warmth or a light snapping sensation on the skin.
  • Number of Sessions: A typical course involves 4-5 sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart, with occasional maintenance treatments afterward.

Is IPL Safe?

Most side effects are mild and resolve within a few hours to a few days.
