How Long Does Laser Eye Surgery Last?
Of all the questions we get asked at Hunter Laser Vision – this one is the most common, how long will my laser eye treatment last?
We’ve written about Laser Eye Surgery, specifically LASIK before, however, here’s a quick recap.
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses (LASIK) surgery is a procedure that reshapes corneal tissues with lasers.
In most cases, LASIK offers permanent vision correction, however, this treatment cannot change certain factors that undermine vision or eye health.
Factors, like age, for example, are unavoidable.
With age, those who undergo LASIK treatment may still experience vision deterioration, particularly the need to rely on reading glasses.
Ultimately, it would make sense to undergo regular eye exams after having LASIK surgery, even if your vision is good.
What eye conditions does LASIK treat?
LASIK surgery changes the shape of the cornea (the clear covering of the front of the eye) and as a result, a number of eye conditions can be treated and corrected.
These include;
Myopia (nearsightedness)
When the eye is longer than the normal eye, the light rays focus at a point in front of the retina, resulting in a blurry view of distant objects.
Hypermetropia (farsightedness)
The eye is shorter than normal and light rays are aimed at a focus point behind the retina, causing a blurring of objects viewed up close.
Astigmatism
An uneven curvature of the cornea causes a distortion of images.
Objects at all distances can appear blurred, especially after dark with bright lights
Is anyone suitable for LASIK treatment?
The short answer is – consult with Ophthalmologist (is a medical specialist with surgical training in eye surgery).
They will be able to determine if you and more importantly, your eyes are suitable for LASIK treatment.
If not, don’t fret, there are other treatment options for vision correction which the eye specialist will discuss with you.
Now, back to the question, how long does laser eye surgery last?
Laser eye surgery is a permanent solution for the correction of common vision defects including long- and short-sightedness, and eliminates the need to wear prescription glasses or contact lenses.
For approximately 96% of patients, the effect of laser eye surgery does not wear off when performed correctly.
For most, it is a permanent treatment for the correction of common vision problems mentioned above, with most patients experiencing marked improvements in their eyesight for many years after surgery.
