New Advancements in Macular degeneration Technology
20 March 2015
Macular degeneration (MD) is the name given to a group of degenerative disease cause the painless and progressive loss of central vision. It effects 1 in 7 people over the age of 50 and is responsible for 48% of all severe vision loss in Australia every year.
Luckily, there have been recent advancements in technology from Australian company ‘Ellex’, who have produced a low impact, low energy laser treatment for patients suffering from early age related macular degeneration. So far the results have been positive!
The nanosecond laser has been proven so far to slow the progression of the disease while causing no damage to the sensitive retina. It works by reversing early markers of the disease which include the thickening of the membrane at the back of the eye and the presence of small fatty deposits called ‘drusen’.
This is exciting news for the research teams involved and is a definite step forward, especially for those who are diagnosed early!
