As much as 75% of vision loss is preventable or treatable if detected early enough. Unfortunately it is often the case that eye health is not something we think about until something goes wrong, however once vision loss has occurred it cannot be fully restored.

In 2016 the Eye Surgeon’s Foundation, Australia’s leading seed funder for eye research, are urging Australians of all ages to help change the way we see our future. The annual JulEYE campaign encourages people of all ages to have regular eye checks and for the first time ever, they are asking you to donate $1 for every good year of good sight you have enjoyed throughout your life. The money raised will go towards the funding of research and treatments to improve vision across Australia and Asia-Pacific region.

The main eye diseases that lead to vision loss are glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts.

The JulEYE campaign promotes a pre-emptive approach towards eye health, this can significantly reduce the risk of developing a serious eye condition. It is therefore so important that people of all ages have their eyes checked regularly in order to detect any emerging issues.

Jacinta Spurrett, CEO of The Eye Surgeons’ Foundation explains “Since 2002 the Foundation has supported more than 200 eye research projects, raised more than $21.4 million for vision initiatives, helped more than 82,800 patients with sight-saving procedures across Asia Pacific, and screened and treated more than 5,000 Aboriginals across the Kimberley/Pilbara regions.”
