Geneane Gusse

Geneane Gusse is a mother of two active children and a prominent member of Newcastle’s business community. Her locally owned business, Gallerie Fine Jewellery at Westfield, Kotara, is renowned for making beautiful and unique pieces of jewellery.

We first met Geneane in 2004, when she came in to our rooms for a consultation. Geneane was frustrated with wearing glasses and contact lenses and was looking for a way to free herself from the hassle for good. “I was wearing both contact lenses and glasses. I would wear the contact lenses during the day and would take the lenses out at night and wear my glasses. It was frustrating because I would often not know where my glasses were… It was just a pain in the neck.”

Geneane was impressed by the patient education process offered at Hunter Laser Vision and by the amount of information given to her during her assessment. She also found the surgeon’s attention to detail comforting.

Now, almost five years after her surgery, Geneane is enjoying living a life free from glasses and contact lenses. “I can see wherever I go. I can see my kids clearly at the beach, whether they are out in the water or on the sand and I can read the numbers on the back of their jerseys when they are playing rugby… I never want to go back to wearing glasses.”

Glen Geary

We find that time and time again patients from Hunter Laser Vision are giving back to the community. Glenn Geary, from the Good Guys, is one such patient. We first met Glenn some seven years ago when he visited our office for laser refractive surgery. Since then he has kindly loaned us televisions for the Newcastle Regional Show Art Exhibition and is always happy to lend his support to worthwhile causes.

Hunter Laser Vision was glad to catch up with this busy patient and hear all about his latest adventures since becoming free from glasses.

“It was frustrating having to wear glasses all the time, especially with my love of water sports, swimming, surfing and water skiing all being restricted by not having good vision.

“Before I went to Hunter Laser Vision I had no perceived idea of where to go. Some friends had had the surgery in Sydney, but I preferred to deal with a local company and after dealing with Sue and the Doctors/Surgeons at HLV I am confident that I made the right choice.

“I still compete as a Skier at Water Ski Racing Competitions on a Regular Basis both in NSW and interstate and being able to see the back of the Boat since my surgery seven years ago is a real bonus. I also enjoy surfing both here in Newie and overseas.

Hunter Laser Vision would also like to thank the Good Guys for generously loaning us a TV & DVD player on an annual basis for the Newcastle Show.

Rick Chapman - Optometrist

Local optometrist Rick Chapman has discovered that in addition to perfect vision, one of the biggest advantages of laser refractive surgery is the reassurance that he can offer his patients.

“There is nothing like being a patient to be a reference point. The fact is that my experience, and I think just about every one of my patients’ experiences, has been fantastic.”

“I am confident in my referring my patients to Hunter Laser Vision because I know what goes on there having been a patient there myself, and when my eyes were in trouble that’s where I rang up. And I guess that’s good for the confidence for my patients, because they can see that ‘well if it’s good enough for my optometrist to go there, maybe I can be confident in going there’.”

“After my experience with Hunter Laser Vision I would generally say that would be my first point of referral. It’s local so you don’t have to go to Sydney, and just the professionalism of the whole procedure, the setup and the aftercare.”

Jane Altschwager

Jane is a former Australian and Newcastle Jaegers Netball representative, and is now enjoying perfect vision on the court as a member of the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Trans-Tasman Netball League.

“You’ve got so many things that you’ve got to do before you train and play…so time and time again I’d be playing without contact lenses and you could certainly feel the difference without them. It’s so good not to have to worry about putting in my contact lenses. It saved me a lot of time, money and effort.”

“This is just a godsend - it works so well and it relieves you of so many things that you have to think about, that its worth at least enquiring about whether you can actually have it done or not.”

“For me it was the convenience of it, with day-to-day life - driving and sporting commitments. It was just a relief that I didn’t have to go through what I had been going through anymore - thinking, ‘thank god, I got that procedure done’.”

Megan Saul

As a full-time mum and Doctor working as a Nuclear Medicine specialist, Megan Saul’s only regret since experiencing the benefits of laser refractive surgery is that she didn’t have the procedure sooner.

“I felt the correction I attained with glasses and contacts was never perfect; it always felt like the second best option.  I wanted to be able to wake up in the morning and see.  The everyday drain with the maintenance of contact lenses and glasses was wearing and took that extra time in my very busy life. I have three young children and if they needed me through the night time, I had to first struggle to find a pair of glasses.  Now I can wake and see through the night time.”

“Within 72 hours, the full potential was evident. It was very exciting and extraordinary. Vision is something normal sighted people take for granted and something that I have never had in my life.”

“It was a very efficient process which I could fit in very precisely into my work schedule. It allowed me to work until midday the day of my consultation.  Travelling out of town for surgery would have been problematic, specifically needing a driver as well who would need to book more time off work.”
