Research is currently ongoing into whether broccoli-related compounds could actually hold the key to age-related macular degeneration treatments.

Researchers at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging have been looking at indole-3-carbinol, a compound that was being studied to find preventions for cancer, and now may have other applications.

Indole-3-carbinol, also referred to as I3C, could clear environmental toxins from cells by activating aryl hydrocarbon receptor proteins, which would then allow for chemical detoxification and a way to stop the progression of AMD.

“AhR, which declines with age, is important for detoxifying the retina. Previous studies show that AhR-deficient mice develop a condition which looks extremely similar to AMD,” said Co-senior author and Buck Institute Assistant Professor Deepak Lamba.

“2AI prevented cell death in the retinas of mice that were exposed to light stress. Our next step is to study the functional outcomes of treatment with 2AI, something that I am eager to do because environmental stress is the major contributor to age-related vision loss.”

The research, published in July, highlighted the role of the lipid metabolism in maintain the health of the retina, reporting that palmitoleic acid had protective effects on the retinal cells in culture and in mice.
